Some interesting choices in England’s squad for the Autumn internationals, with uncapped forwards Mako Vunipola and Tom Youngs joining the squad alongside the returning Ugo Monye and James Haskell.
Vunipola’s selection is an especially bold one given that he’s still just 21 and no doubt, given his Tongan heritage, there will be those who claim that he is simply not English enough, despite the fact that he came to these shores as a youngster in 1998 and has graduated through the England Under 18s and Under 20s, much like Manu Tuilagi before him.
On the flipside, I’m a little disappointed with the selection of Monye ahead of, say, Jonny May. Nothing against Monye per se – he’s been in fine form by all accounts – but if England are to develop an attacking game to rival the best in 2015 it would have been great to see if the likes of May is up to the mark.
